GlossAdvisor - A Car Care Knowledge Platform That Actually Explains Why
I’ve been working on a side project that’s starting to take shape , GlossAdvisor.com. It’s a car care knowledge platform aimed at everyday car owners, and I want to share a bit about the idea behind it.
What is GlossAdvisor?
GlossAdvisor started from a simple observation: there’s no shortage of car care products and tips online, but very little that actually explains why you do things. Most guides just say “use product X” without explaining what it does, why it’s better than the alternative, or when you actually need it.
The goal with GlossAdvisor is to fill that gap. The site is aimed at both the beginner who’s never thought about car washing beyond driving into an automatic car wash, and the enthusiast who already knows what a polishing machine is but wants to understand the chemistry and technique a bit deeper.
What’s on the site?
Knowledge articles that explain the why
One example is the question of hand washing versus automatic car washes. The simple answer is that hand washing is better , but why? Automatic car washes risk scratching the paint with their brushes, especially if they’re not properly maintained and carry dirt from previous cars. Hand washing with the right technique and products dramatically reduces the risk of wash swirls.
The site covers that kind of question:
- Hand washing vs. automatic car wash , what actually happens to your paint?
- How to avoid swirl marks when washing your car
- Which washing approach fits depending on how dirty your car is
- How to get the best visibility in rain , and what is hydrophobic coating?
A washing assistant that builds your personal routine
One of the more unique features on the site is the washing assistant. Instead of reading through a wall of text to figure out what applies to you, you answer a few questions and get a personalised washing schedule in return.
It asks things like: what tools do you have at home? What season is it? Which products do you prefer or already own? Based on your answers it puts together a step-by-step routine tailored to your situation , not a generic one-size-fits-all guide.
The assistant also helps with timing. Each step has a built-in timer so you know exactly how long to let a product dwell before rinsing, or how long to wait before buffing off a coating. The whole thing is designed to be used on your phone while you’re standing next to the car, so the layout and interactions are fully mobile-friendly.
It’s the kind of tool I wish had existed when I started getting interested in proper car care.
Product guides with honest recommendations
I’m not a fan of product guides that just list a “best in test” without context. The idea with GlossAdvisor is to recommend products I genuinely believe in, while also highlighting cheaper alternatives and actually explaining the difference in performance.
One example is an article on windshield treatment: Tershine Vision+ and Magnify Coating are strong recommendations in the premium segment. They last long, are easy to apply and give a clearly noticeable result in rain. But there are budget alternatives that absolutely work , the difference is mainly durability and how often you need to reapply. That’s the kind of nuanced comparison the site tries to offer.
Why am I building this?
Partly because it’s a genuine interest. Car care is one of those things I actually enjoy reading about and testing. But it’s also a project where I want to learn more about building a niche content site that can eventually sustain itself through affiliate links and ads.
It’s a long-term project. Good content takes time to write and even longer to rank in search engines. But that’s exactly the kind of project I enjoy , something built brick by brick.
The site currently launches in Swedish, with an English version planned down the road.
